Dear Science Students

Dear Science Students,

I am sorry your subjects are difficult. I am sorry you can’t cope with them more often than not. I am sorry you have three subjects more than I do and most of all, I am sorry I chose to do something I love.
I am sorry for everything I am about to say, but you need to hear it.
You are not better than me. I still have to study, like you do. I still have books, I still have assignments. I still have a brain and feelings, too.
So every time you say to me “You’re an arts student because you’re stupid”, think again.
I am an arts student because I chose to be so.
And I did not choose my subjects because it means less studying and an easy time.
I made this decision because I would rather spend my education learning about how the mind works and about society rather than chemicals and the human anatomy.
This is what I love and shame on you if you can’t respect that.
Yes, I got 92% in my tenth boards and yes, I did not have math or science.
But that doesn’t mean I was handed that 92% on a silver fucking platter.
No, I worked just as hard as you did. I studied day in and day out and I went to my tuitions every single day. And I solved papers and revised everything a thousand times, just like you did.
So don’t you dare invalidate that. Don’t you dare come and tell me that my 92% doesn’t count because I had economics, commerce and arts as my subjects.
Quit complaining about how science is the most difficult stream ever and arts is a cakewalk.
I am sorry you don’t enjoy your subjects.
I am sorry you have to continually put arts students down just to feel good about choosing science.
I am sorry, but get a fucking life, mate.

Sincerely,

An Arts student

  3. Hey girl I'm a science student and I love my subjects ❤️ Its so much better than history or economics and its so sad u actually had to write that cause lemme tell you we really don't care what you think about us and not all science students consider arts students to be stupid and lastly yes we do have 2 subjects more to study and we enjoy it more than you guys do on your one subject

    1. Yeah.. I agree with you.. I'm a science student too! And we too, chose science because we love science, and weren't interested in studying how the human mind and society works but rather about laws of nature! Everyone has their own choices and preference! And fyi, I love my fucking life! So, stop generalizing! Not every science student is sad or cringing about his life!

    3. this is addressed to all the science students who treat arts students like inferiors. if you aren't one, then i'm honestly glad there's people like you out there! and i did not mean to say that you don't love your subjects, all i wanted to say was that just as you take pride in choosing your subjects, you should let us take pride in our subjects as well. nowhere have i insulted any of your subjects, having loved biology quite a bit myself. i just feel that this is the general attitude of the students as well of the society and only wanted to do something about it or at least express my feelings about it. no hard feelings x

    4. i completely respect your subjects and everything y'all do but it is the kind of attitude i've mentioned that i do not respect in a science student.

    5. I appreciate your effort and understand your intentions! But it's kinda offensive that you're directing it to all of us.. Whereas this is the mindset of many people and it most certainly needs to stop!

  4. Dear Arts Student,

I am sorry you feel the need to defend your subjects. I am sorry you feel that subjects determine your coping ability, there goes all your psychology. I am sorry you have three subjects less than I do and most of all, I am not sorry I chose subjects that demand our love and dedication.

I am sorry for everything I am about to say, but you need to hear it.

Don’t be so preconceived that we discriminate based on subjects. ‘I still have to study, like you do’ – obviously, don’t crib at least for that.. isn’t that what education is about. Motions, feelings and all these terms you sprinkle in your letter, it’s Science which let you understand those… FYI: Psychology is a scientific study (Refer: Grade 11 NCERT)

So every time you say to me “I am an Arts student because I chose to be so”, think again.
I am a science student because I achieved to be so.
And I did not choose my subjects because it means supremacy and means to show off.

I made this decision because 12th Science would give a base to propel and give me a different perspective, a chance to hone my analytical and innovative skills unparalleled to any stream. On the contrary, the electives offered in CBSE humanities would confine me to memorize texts after texts.

This is what I love and shame on you if you wanted to blare at us on that.
Congratulations on your 92 percent, but come on, we all know 10th is an easy year, definitely for CBSE science students- cuz duh according to the 'bullshitty' way of the Indian study system only the cream of the batch are offered Science.

No, one says that an amazing score is handed to you on a silver platter, but just try to apply that education you so deeply defend… let’s just see where all that mugging can get us!

Quit complaining about how arts and science are compared… stop placing science so high and trying to get humanities up there… cause Ms. Topper the issue should not be who is better? The issue should be to reduce this large stereotypical view amongst Indians and regard Science an integral part of Art and vice- versa. The issue should be to better the education system.

I am sorry you felt this divide. I am sorry you an educated youth of today were victim to this never ending feud of streams.
I am sorry you have to continually put arts students up and make science kids feel like pathetic depressed discriminators.
I am sorry, but get a fucking life, mate.

    With respect,
    A Science Student

    2. do literally none of you science students grasp that i am not insulting your subjects? im really sorry if it felt that way, when in fact all i did was defend mine because that's how it is. perhaps it also depends from place to place, because honestly back in bombay this was not such a huge deal whereas in bangalore, everybody will just not stop with the arts bashing. i wholeheartedly believe that arts and science are equally important. the reason i said 'your subjects are difficult' and everything is because that's what most science students thing of us. and i am not 'cribbing' about having to study. i am simply reminding the prejudiced science students that having arts subjects does not make me any less of a hardworking individual. you will never know this discrimination till you're facing it. im sorry you feel the need to defend society's prejudiced way of thinking and fucked up system that has been drilled into our heads since forever.
I'M NOT TRYING TO PUT ARTS STUDENTS UP. this is not a post to make science students feel like shit (although that would be quite the karmic retribution if they do end up feeling like it). the one and only purpose of this post was for me to be able to express my feelings, because believe it or not. this is how arts students are treated.
a science student on my facebook shared a 'meme' that said 'i do not always speak to arts students, but when i do, it is to order a large fries.' i have had people ask me to drop arts and be unemployed already because that's what i'll be doing in my future anyway. i have been told i am too stupid and that i 'wasted' my 92% on arts. you know what that feels like? to be so openly invalidated in front of everyone? it's not a good feeling.
and fyi, it was 92% in ICSE.

    4. Dear Science Student,

First of all, I don't really know why this had to go on for so long. You could've just accepted what we felt and let it be.

Your apologies to anything in the beginning are moot, because we don't really think our subject have anything to do
with our "coping abilities". Pointing out we have "three less subjects" to me seems like cribbing, so you're just contradicting yourself here? We never went about begging people to pity us over our subjects, in fact, we're rather proud of them (believe it or not).

The fact that you have to apologise before saying all this does two things; it proves that you're saying something wrong that needs an apology and next, invalidates your apology because it's just an insult after injury; you're nonetheless going to say the same probably derogatory things we've heard before and then some more.

None of us are biased and have a preconception (using the words right, our subjects taught us that) that we're discriminated against for our subjects. We don't "crib" about having to study, that's what I've seen your beloved Science students do. And Science let's you learn the chemical composition of feelings and whatever. Psychology which you pointed is a scientific subject, but there's a reason it's included in Humanities; it's that it's necessary to understand humans humanely and not as a scientific formula, and memorising those formulas could never actually help you help a human. The fact that you pointed out that Psychology is a Scientific subject itself makes our case easier; we too are studying a scientific subject, so our 92% must somewhere be relevant here?

The reason we feel the need to point out that "I'm an Arts Student because I chose to be so," is because many of you forget that I could have chosen Science myself and I could say "I chose Science because I achieved it" or whatever. I had the choice between all three streams and I chose what I chose. You might not have chosen the subjects to show supremacy, but once you get in, society has taught you you're in a position of power and hence it is alright for you to flaunt it. Those in positions of power seldom let go of it and see to it that those positions are passed onto their successors. And positions of power equals the power of majority. Explaining this further would mean teaching you Sociology which for some reason you think is all too easy, so let's not "waste your precious" time which you could spend studying your very important subjects, yeah?

The electives offered in the Humanities stream range from subjects that are under the wing of Liberal Arts, Commerce and Science, so please tell me where I'm being confined to just memorising? Whereas the subjects you do are theories conceptualised by people years and years ago that you do not bother questioning. I do not see a lot of analysis there.

Let's not speak about 10th grade score because I've already made a point about it somewhere up top.

Another thing Sociology taught us is that to change the way Society conceives things, you have to tackle it at the root where it began. So no, this isn't us complaining about who's above who, it's us trying to show people that there is an existing order which is based of ideas that have no base and hence we'd like to change that order. Only when you attempt to change the existing prejudices, stereotypes and the discrimination will you be able to, overall, change the education system.

Your apology like I said is moot if you feel the need to make yourself look like the victims even when you're not. And an half assed apology is not what we want.
I'm sorry, but get a fucking life, mate.

      Sincerely,
      An Arts Student

    5. You know something hilarious??? Try telling an Engineering Student(Idk about medicine so I can't say anything about it) that you want to study physics, maths or chemistry or go work for ISRO or something or any science related stuff (while in engineering) instead of doing MBA. 75% of them are going to call you an idiot and call you hopeless with stupid goals in life.So well, get your facts straight before saying that only arts students are discriminated against. I've met a lot of science students (cause I am one) who think that pure sciences are stupid (nice engineering aspirants) and science is just a tool to be used to get an MBA and big bucks(not saying everyone like this is as I've mentioned exceptions are always there) which gets me into a lot of fights with them. Doing an BSc doesn't have much scope(from what I've heard) in India either so you'll end up doing engineering either way and get stuck with those 'big buck' guys who have zero respect for science, which is terrible.

So if you ever meet anyone who actually loves science(Not saying Engineers don't just to clarify), he'll general love have a love for knowledge and learn and might even take interest in learning arts.
So yes there are a few of us who actually love science and we are discriminated against by arts students as your stereotypical science student (aka MBA aspirants) who insult arts left right and centre, and you are probably going to be discriminated against by science students themselves(as told above). So yes, a few of us who actually get into science cause they love it feel discriminated from both sides and ostracized a bit(Like who the hell likes us?).
And for the record I read psychology on the side when I'm bored because I find it entertaining and I write stuff too, I too get bored doing hard sciences 24/7. So yes I do find humanities and Arts fascinating because it takes me away from the scientific view of things and gives me a different and fresher view at things which I find amazing. So appreciably pick up a big ass science book once in a while and try to read it maybe you'll find something interesting in it as well.

      Thanks for reading

    6. Protishruti Raha- PS: That is the problem with you.... read the whole fucking letter. Since you don't heres the extract you could read:
'Quit complaining about how arts and science are compared… stop placing science so high and trying to get humanities up there… cause Ms. Topper the issue should not be who is better? FYI: I know I am not a victim cause I chose science, but I know I do not want to be a victim to your stupidity and ignorance :)

  19. Honestly, I'm glad this post exists.
I've always wanted to take Arts because I'm a HUGE history nerd, and I'm going to major in International studies after 12th. But alas, I took science. I enjoy science, but I feel personally attacked whenever someone attacks Arts. The number of ignorant people on this feed as me rolling lol.
"All you peasants would end up working for me anyway'' --> lmao. This statement was so ignorant that it caused me physical pain. This is what happens when you look down on subjects that have made humongous contributions to the society :)) [Seriously Manmohan Singh specialised in Economics. Pls read up guys]

The author never once insulted the science subjects, she was addressing the general mentality that is there in Bangalore. Note the word, ''general'. None of this is directed towards any of you personally. But if you're denying that the problem is there, then you are part of the problem. Any subject is mugging up if you make it to be. Mug up Biology or Political science, you're satisfying the Indian education system either way. But to specialise in either require an equal amount of effort, so acknowledge that. Be the mature people you make yourselves out to be.

Stop being butthurt and face the truth. There is a discrimination between the streams, and that is a fact.

    Sincerely,
    A science student

I am a science student but always wanted to take up arts. alas i was forced to take science because i got very high marks in 10th. but hey i love science too! but i must confess we science students always looked down upon arts and commerce students. i guess it was a case of sour grapes - we always seemed to study all the time, while the arts students seemed to have a life outside studies. they seemed to a part of all the extra curricular activities and enjoying much more than just mugging up to get into either a medical school or engineering college...
so kudos to you for speaking up for the arts students. frankly speaking the world needs all types - hope you kids realise that sooner than later...

  23. Well said. TBH arts is tougher than science because of the criticism that people go through. But I'm sure that will come to an end someday just like in the west.

  24. So if the debate is just about generalising science students, why don't you just edit the post and specifically address it to only those science students who don't enjoy their subjects and who don't respect humanities. Through your words, it seems that all science students are the same and none of us has a life though maybe you want to say something else. End of debate.

  27. Ok just let me try to put an end to this nice, lovely and amazing war that's been going on, yes war

For starters I am a science student and to be fair I am going to points out the flaws in science students, at least from my perspective.

alright here's a nice approximate number of you who think lowly of arts, 75%. Yup, you may hate to admit it but you do but you do think lowly of arts.Maybe I can't blame you because you have probably been told this since you were a kid that "Arts is for jobless, stupid people who get less percentage and want to have fun all the time" and I know that its a really really really hard thing to remove something that's been drilled into your head since you were a kid, but for 2 minutes of your life think if you do truly think lowly of arts students and if you do, well, go and meet some that's how I got rid of my prejudice. You just realize they are as lazy as you are and as smart as you are.
Every great scientist ever did something artistic in nature. Einstein played the violin in his free time, Feynman played the bongo drums and wrote two autobiographies(Which are hilarious as they are interesting) and Stephen hawking has written many books. So if the great scientists that most people admire (Sorry I only know physicists) could do something artistic, who the hell says that arts is "beneath us" that would be the harshest way to put the attitude.

And if you belong to the rest of the 25% thanks for reading this and probably getting offended but well, good job of chucking prejudice out of the window of your mind.

Now for the arts students, who have been smiling in their heads all along. So prepare yourself.

For starters, I'll admit I'm somewhat jealous of all the freedom you get. I gotta bury my head in my books most of the time preparing for 10 different entrance exams (Engineering, you know what I mean). I don't know why, but most of you here have given into society by actually thinking that your entire stream sucks. Yes this blogpost is really well written I'll give the author that. But why do arts students want to undermine science(yes you want to because most of your reactions would be OMG WHAT THE HELL IS THIS GUY SAYING, and those who don't react this way, bravo you are in the IDGAF category which is good) if you want to tell us that arts is equally better? You could tell everyone how arts is good instead of how you feel 'sorry' for science students. Hell one of the people I admire, Robin Williams, is from arts(Duh!) because I freaking doubt science can make people laugh as much as stand up comedy can, and no I know stand up comedy isn't a subject but it is an art. So riddle me this at the end, is it science students that discriminate against you or is it your own head that is playing tricks on you and telling you that your subject is inferior and this is just some form of subconscious redemption or payback for you?
and to end this one final quote:-
"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science."-Albert Einstein

So I guess both have something in common after all, so how about stopping all the discrimination and stereotyping and understanding each other instead?

Maybe we can team up against the commerce students who have been sitting on the side lines and laughing :P
